Heat Pump Noise: What’s Normal and What Isn’t?

Understand the sounds your air source heat pump makes, spot potential faults early and know when to call a qualified engineer.

Air source heat pumps make some noise as they move air, run the compressor and manage the heating cycle. Most sounds are harmless, but a sudden change in volume, rhythm or character can indicate a developing fault. Knowing what to listen for helps you decide whether a simple outdoor check is enough or whether your system needs professional attention.

Sounds your heat pump may normally make

Normal operating sounds tend to be steady, predictable and linked to a particular part of the heating cycle. Your heat pump may sound different when starting, running at full output or switching into defrost mode, particularly during cold weather.

Fan and air movement

A gentle whirring or rushing sound usually comes from the outdoor fan drawing air across the heat exchanger. The noise may become louder when the system is working harder, then reduce as the required temperature is reached. Light airflow noise is generally expected, provided the fan runs smoothly without scraping or wobbling.

Compressor hum and relay clicks

A low, consistent hum is commonly produced by the compressor. You may also hear a click when a relay switches a component on or off, especially during start-up or when the unit changes operating mode. These occasional clicks should not be accompanied by repeated failed starts, harsh buzzing or a burning smell.

Defrost whoosh

In cold or damp conditions, ice can form on the outdoor coil. The heat pump will periodically enter defrost mode, which can create a noticeable whoosh, hiss or change in fan sound as the system temporarily reverses its operation. A small amount of steam or water during this cycle can also be normal.

Noises that may signal a problem

Unusual sounds should be taken seriously when they are new, becoming louder or accompanied by reduced heating performance. The sound itself can offer clues, but accurate diagnosis normally requires an engineer to inspect the fan, compressor, refrigerant circuit and mounting arrangement.

Grinding, screeching or scraping

Grinding or scraping may indicate worn fan bearings, a damaged fan motor or debris contacting the blades. A high-pitched screech can also point to a mechanical component under strain. Switch the system off if the noise is severe or the fan appears unsafe, then arrange a qualified inspection.

Rattling, banging and vibration

Loud rattling can be caused by a loose access panel, grille, screw or internal component. Repetitive banging may suggest fan imbalance, an obstruction or ice contacting the blades. Vibration travelling through brackets or the wall can result from poor mounting, worn anti-vibration feet or a component that is no longer balanced correctly.

A sudden increase in volume

A noticeable increase in operating noise may be linked to restricted airflow, heavy ice build-up, a blocked coil or debris around the outdoor unit. In some cases, refrigerant problems can make the compressor work harder and affect both sound and performance. Refrigerant faults and sealed-system repairs must only be handled by a suitably qualified engineer.

Safe checks you can carry out

Before arranging a repair, observe when the sound occurs and whether it changes with fan speed, weather or defrost mode. From ground level, you can safely clear leaves, grass and other loose debris around the unit, while keeping the manufacturer’s required clearances around the air inlet and outlet.

You can also look for an obviously loose external panel or screw, but do not remove covers or put your hands near the fan. Never chip ice away with a tool, spray water into the unit or attempt to adjust refrigerant, electrical or internal mechanical components.

  • Keep plants, bins and stored items away from the unit

  • Remove loose leaves and debris from around the casing

  • Check for visible panels or grilles that appear loose

  • Note the timing, type and volume of the noise

Will noise get worse?

It can. A loose fixing, worn bearing, fan imbalance or blocked airflow may gradually become noisier as the part experiences further stress. Recording a short video or noting when the noise occurs can help an engineer identify the fault more quickly.

Is unusual heat pump noise dangerous?

Noise alone does not always mean immediate danger, but grinding, burning smells, electrical buzzing, severe vibration or repeated failed starts should not be ignored. Turn the system off and seek professional advice if you are concerned, particularly if there is visible damage, smoke or a refrigerant leak is suspected.

Can noise mean poor efficiency?

Yes. A restricted airflow, dirty coil, ice problem, failing fan or refrigerant fault can make the heat pump work harder and use more electricity. Unusual noise alongside colder rooms, longer running times or higher energy bills is a good reason to arrange servicing.
