Boiler Keeps Losing Pressure? Causes and What to Do

If your boiler keeps losing pressure, it can be worrying and frustrating, especially when it starts affecting your heating and hot water. The good news is that many causes are straightforward to understand, and some early checks can help you decide what to do next safely.

What normal boiler pressure looks like

Most modern combi and system boilers have a pressure gauge on the front, often with a green band showing the normal range. For many systems, normal cold pressure is around 1.0 to 1.5 bar, but always check your boiler manual for the exact recommendation.

When the heating is on and the water in the system heats up, the pressure will rise slightly. An increase of around 0.3 to 0.5 bar is usually normal because hot water expands. Once the system cools down again, the pressure should drop back close to its original level.

If your pressure is frequently dropping below 1.0 bar, or you have to keep topping it up, there is likely a fault that needs attention rather than just a one off adjustment.

Common reasons boiler pressure keeps dropping

There are several typical causes when a boiler will not hold pressure. Some are simple to resolve, while others need a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Small leaks on radiators, valves or pipework

Minor leaks are one of the most frequent reasons for pressure loss. You might not see obvious dripping, but even a slow weep can gradually drop the pressure over days or weeks.

  • Check around radiator valves and pipe joints for staining or green/white crusty deposits

  • Look for damp patches on floors, skirting boards or ceilings below radiators and pipes

  • Feel gently behind radiators for moisture, staying clear of any electrical items

A helpful tip is the towel test. Wrap a dry piece of kitchen roll or a light-coloured cloth around suspect valves and joints. Leave it for a while, then check for damp marks that might show a tiny leak you cannot easily see.

Pressure relief valve discharging water

Your boiler has a safety device called a pressure relief valve (PRV). If the pressure gets too high, this valve releases water to stop the system becoming unsafe. If the PRV is faulty or has been triggered, it can keep losing small amounts of water.

Outside your property, look for a small copper pipe coming through the wall near where the boiler is installed. This is usually the PRV outlet. If you see water dripping from this pipe, or staining on the wall below it, the valve may be letting by and causing the pressure to fall.

Do not try to dismantle or cap this pipe. It is a safety feature and must only be worked on by a qualified engineer.

Faulty expansion vessel

The expansion vessel gives the hot water somewhere to expand into when the heating is on. If the vessel loses its internal air charge or fails, your boiler pressure can swing up and down a lot. The PRV may then release water, and the pressure can drop too low when the system cools.

Signs of an expansion vessel issue include pressure jumping high when heating is on, then dropping very low when it is off, and needing frequent top ups. Testing and recharging or replacing an expansion vessel is a job for a heating engineer.

Recently bled radiators

If you have recently bled radiators to remove trapped air, it is normal for the boiler pressure to drop a little. Letting air out also removes some water from the system, which reduces the pressure.

After bleeding, you usually need to top up the pressure via the filling loop to get it back into the normal range. However, if the pressure keeps dropping after a day or two, there may be another underlying issue that needs checking.

Filling loop left slightly open

The filling loop is the flexible or rigid braided hose used to add water to your boiler from the mains. It normally has one or two valves that must be completely closed after you have finished topping up.

If a valve is left slightly open, it can cause the pressure to keep changing, and in some cases repeatedly trigger the PRV. Visually check that both ends of the filling loop valves are fully closed and in the correct position, in line with your boiler instructions.

Safe checks you can do at home

There are a few sensible checks most homeowners can carry out without opening the boiler or touching any gas components. If you are ever unsure, stop and contact a professional.

Start with a visual inspection around your home. Look at radiators, exposed pipework and valves for signs of damp, rust, flaking paint or limescale deposits. Pay attention to areas where pipes disappear under floors or into walls, as staining nearby can hint at leaks.

Use the towel or kitchen roll test around suspect joints and radiator valves to pick up tiny weeps. Check the outside PRV outlet pipe for drip marks. Note any boiler error codes showing on the display, as these help an engineer diagnose the fault.

Never remove the boiler case on a modern gas boiler, adjust internal screws or attempt to work on the gas or combustion side. These tasks are for a Gas Safe registered engineer only.

When to call an engineer

Some pressure loss issues are minor, but certain signs mean you should contact a heating engineer promptly. Acting early can prevent further damage to your boiler and your home.

Call an engineer if the pressure drops rapidly to zero, especially within hours of topping up, or if you find you are re-pressurising more than once a month. Repeated top ups can introduce fresh oxygen into the system, increasing corrosion and sludge buildup.

Water anywhere near electrics, the boiler casing or wiring is a red flag. Switch the boiler off and seek professional help. If the boiler shows error codes, locks out, or you can see water coming from the PRV outlet regularly, an expert diagnosis is essential.

Preventing future boiler pressure problems

Good maintenance goes a long way towards reducing pressure issues. An annual boiler service allows an engineer to check the expansion vessel, PRV, seals and other components before they fail. It also helps keep your system running efficiently.

Keep an eye on small weeps or stains around radiators and valves and deal with them early. A tiny, inexpensive repair now can prevent larger leaks, damaged floors and boiler breakdowns later on. If you notice frequent pressure changes, mention them at your next service so they can be properly investigated.
